Indonesian Kecap Manis Recipe
This rich and flavorful Kecap Manis sauce is delicious with a simple appetizer such as bread, crackers or with a banana wontons recipe. Prawn crackers would be nice with this delicious and piquant dip or any kind of crackers or vegetable crudités. If you like Asian flavors, and especially Asian sauces with plenty of delicious ingredients like soy sauce, sesame oil, lime juice, shallots and more, this wonderful dipping sauce recipe is highly recommended because it is easy to make and tastes wonderful.
You can get sambal, which is an Indonesian chili sauce, in Indonesian or Chinese markets. Alternatively, just use red chili paste. As with most recipes that contain spicy ingredients, you can go easy on the spices or add extra, depending how spicy you want the finished sesame sauce teriyaki dip to be.

Indonesian Sweet Soy Sauce

The sesame sauce gives a nutty flavor to this dipping sauce, the sambal adds heat, and the lime juice adds a wonderful sharpness to the overall flavor. Since you just have to combine the ingredients to make this sauce, it does not take long and this is one of our easy party appetizers. If you run out of this lime and sesame sauce you can quickly make some more.

Kecap Manis Ingredients 

  1. ¼ cup lime juice
  2. 2 shallots
  3. 1 teaspoon sugar
  4. 2 tablespoons sambal
  5. 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
  6. 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  7. ¼ cup soy sauce
  8. Kaffir lime leaves, for garnish

Kecap Manis Preparation

  1. Dice the shallots and cut the kaffir lime leaves into strips.
  2. Combine everything except the lime leaves in a small pan over a low heat and stir until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Scatter the lime leaves on top for a garnish.
  4. You can serve this dipping sauce warm or chilled.

This appetizingly colored, reddish brown dip is thick, sweet, and tempting. Dip banana wontons, mini egg rolls, prawn crackers or chunks of bread into it and the sticky sauce will stick to whatever you dip. This sauce is equally good warm or chilled and you might like to contrast the serving temperature with whatever you are serving to dip into it. For example, hot banana wontons are nice dipped into a chilled sauce. Cold chunks of bread are nice dipped into a warm sauce. This is not a hard and fast rule though and you can choose to serve it warm or cold, for dipping your easy party appetizers into.
